Byzantine Generals’ Problem

/ˈbɪzənˌtaɪn ˌdʒɛnərəlz ˈprɒbləm/noun

The Byzantine generals' problem refers to the challenge of achieving consensus among a group of nodes (aka generals). This is a massive problem in blockchain networks, where the integrity of the network relies on the consensus mechanism.

Some of the problems that could occur are :

  • node crashes
  • network failures
  • malicious attacks
  • nodes provide conflicting information
  • nodes fail to respond

The problem gets its name from a hypothetical scenario where a group of Byzantine generals is attempting to coordinate an attack on a city. But the generals must communicate with each other through messengers who can be intercepted or corrupted.
